Old Haileyburians RFC

7 - 14

(HT 7-7)

Old Freemens RFC

Old Freemen’s maintained their one hundred per cent record away from home with a well-deserved victory against Old Haileyburians.

Haileyburians started strongly with their large forwards making driving down the middle of the park but their backs were rather static and failed to take advantage that the forwards created. However, after eighteen minutes, following a penalty and kick to the corner, the home side opened their account from a driving maul to the line. The conversion was successful.

Freemen’s followed with a period of sustained pressure as they tried to use their swift backs to outrun the larger Haileyburian three quarters. Chances were missed, a menacing surge from a maul close to the home side line with the line beckoning, the ball was turned over and Matt Jackson danced his way past a number of defenders to give Max Davies a scoring pass, only for the wing to be in touch. Half time 7-0.

In the second half, Freemen’s started to play a wide expansive game and it was only a matter of time

before Matt Jackson scored. He beat three defenders from thirty metres out to dot down under the posts. Tom Abraham converted.7-7 after fifty five minutes. It was one way traffic after that, with Tom Abraham and Jim Wilson both missing penalties.

Coach, Jon Moore, rang the changes bringing on Tom Fisher, Rob Morrison and Mitch Pickering.

It was Morrison, with twelve minutes remaining, who took a high ball wide out, scythed past a couple of defenders to give a scoring pass to Nick Etherington, half way out. Jim Wilson converted to make the score 7-14. Freemen’s stout defence meant that there were no further scores in the half.

The win took Freemen’s to seventh in the Counties Surrey 2 with sixteen points.
