Old Freemens RFC

36 - 31

(HT 7-19)

Law Society RFC

Old Freemen’s left it late to beat a spirited Law Society at Ashtead Park. Playing on the Old Boys pitch for the first time this season marked the first home win.

The first half had belonged to the visitors, both in attack and defence with their inside centre to the fore. It was the no12 who scored after Freemen’s were brought back for a forward pass and following a scrum in the middle of the pitch, the centre went in unopposed. Ten minutes later, Law Society increased their lead with a sharp try from their open side flanker. The conversion was successful so the lead was twelve points.

Freemen’s started creating opportunities, launching a fluent multi-phase attack with Tom Abraham crashing over which Jim Wilson converted, 7-12. On the stroke of half time, Max Davies gifted a try to the away side when his pass was intercepted by the Law Society inside centre who ran in unopposed. With a successful conversion, the half time score was 7-19.

Soon after half time, a flowing move in the home side’s backs gave centre, Veisa Vilikesa, the opportunity to score his team’s second try, converted by Jim Wilson, 14-19. Law Society replied with a try of their own from a replacement on the left wing who scored in the corner, increasing their lead to ten points. Luke Hunter capitalized on some wayward defending with a powerful run to score near the posts which Wilson converted which was followed by a Law Society yellow card for a deliberate knock-on, 21-24.

Matt Jackson scored a typical solo try beating three defenders to the line, Abraham added the conversion, taking the home side ahead for the first time. Abraham followed up soon after with a penalty, stretching the lead to seven points. The visitors replied with a sweeping backs’ move, scoring half-way out. The conversion was successful, leaving the score 31-31 with five minutes left on the clock.

With time running out, Freemen’s pulled Law Society across the pitch, creating an opportunity for James Bell to score in the right-hand corner and the team’s fifth try. The conversion was missed leaving the score 36-31 to the home team. In the end, a hard, but well-deserved win.
